Dr Ilonka Meyer is a Specialist in Pain Medicine and Anaesthesia.

She graduated from the University of Pretoria in South Africa before undertaking vocational training in South Africa and Australia. Ilonka became a Fellow of the Faculty of Pain Medicine of the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists in 2018.  

In addition to her work at Pain Specialists Australia, Ilonka also holds an appointment as Deputy Head of the Acute Pain Service and Pain Specialist at the Austin Hospital in Heidelberg, Melbourne.  She completed her Pain Fellowship training at the Royal Children’s Hospital, Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, and Austin Health and her anaesthesia training at Austin Health, Northern Health, Western Health, Monash Health and Bendigo Hospital. 

Prior to these appointments Ilonka was a Paediatric procedural seditionist in South Africa and held an appointment as a lecturer and program coordinator of the Procedural Sedation and Pain Management Diploma, at the University of Western Cape.  Ilonka completed her internship year at Tygerberg academic hospital and performed a community service year at George Provincial Hospital.  

Ilonka has contributed to several research papers and studies ranging from the development of analgesic guidelines in surgical patients, cancer anaesthesia analysis, pain services handbooks, diabetes and paediatric procedural studies within ICU, anaesthesia, emergency medicine and dentistry.

Ilonka is passionate about local, regional, national and international human rights and provides high quality patient care.  She has a strong interest in cancer pain, palliative care, paediatrics and interventional pain medicine.
